Club Teams
What do club swim teams give you?
I’m thinking of joining a club team and I was just wondering if it’s any different or better than a high school varsity team. (I am on one right now.) Are they any better for college?
I swam for both and noticed some differences. The clubs I swam for had practice during the evening, usually from 5 to 8, which can be an inconvenient time. Club practice seemed to be less strict, meaning missing some days wasn’t a big deal. Also, there are meets every few weeks, where as in high school meets are every few days. Club meets are also long with many kids, events, and age groups. Sometimes meets are far away while most high school meets are close. High school meets are also very quick with the same 12 events each time. In addition, I enjoyed high school swimming more because I had more fun. Also, the club season is much longer than the high school season. But overall, if you want to get better and possibly swim in college I highly recommend joining a club team. Colleges will absolutely look at high school times, especially from state championship meets, but club teams also have prestigious, high-caliber meets (i.e.-regional, sectionals, nationals, etc).
